Provenance

Where it came from

Nether Traitor was originally introduced in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering set Time Spiral. Designed as a recurring creature that leans into the game's graveyard-focused mechanics, the card features the shadow ability, allowing it to evade standard combat interactions. The original illustration by Darrell Riche highlights the creature's ethereal, sinister nature, fitting the card's theme of a returning menace that refuses to stay defeated.

This specific printing appears in the 2021 Secrets of Strixhaven Commander release, which serves as a supplemental expansion to the Strixhaven: School of Mages set. The card's inclusion in this collection provided players with access to a strategic staple within the Commander format. Its design aesthetic maintains the consistency of the original iteration while situating it within the broader visual context of the modern Commander deck releases.
