Where it came from
Immoral Bargain was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander expansion, specifically designed to support the Witherbloom Witchcraft deck. This card fits into the broader Magic: The Gathering mechanical landscape by emphasizing the black-aligned themes of life-resource management and graveyard utility, which are core to the Witherbloom college of the Strixhaven University setting.
The visual identity of the card was established through the collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and illustrator Marta Nael, who crafted a scene embodying the gothic academic aesthetic of the expansion. The artwork focuses on the exchange of vitality for forbidden knowledge, reflecting the high-stakes narrative tension inherent in the set's magical lore. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its efficiency in card advantage decks that capitalize on sacrificing small creatures for long-term strategic gain.
