Where it came from
Netherborn Altar was introduced in the Commander 2020 set, a release designed specifically to expand the popular Commander multiplayer format. The card functions as an artifact that allows players to return creatures from their graveyard to their hand at the cost of life, serving as a tactical tool for recursion strategies. It was developed within a cycle of cards intended to provide utility and thematic depth to the Commander-focused decks released that year.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Volkan Baga, who utilized a dark, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the macabre essence of an altar dedicated to necromancy. Baga's design choices emphasize the grim, ritualistic nature of the effect, fitting seamlessly into the horror-adjacent visual language often found in black-aligned Magic: The Gathering cards. Since its release, the card has been received as a niche but effective piece of utility for graveyard-centric decks, valued by players for its flexible mana cost and repeatable engine.
