Where it came from
Nettling Imp was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to create a portable, deeply strategic experience that combined elements of traditional card games with the complexity of fantasy role-playing. The card represents a core component of the set's initial release, which was printed in limited quantities and remains highly significant in the history of collectible gaming.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and influential early illustrators for the game. Rush utilized a distinct, evocative style that helped define the visual identity of Magic's early sets, often focusing on dark fantasy aesthetics and character-driven pieces. Nettling Imp was received as a functional tool for competitive play during the game's infancy, lauded for its ability to force interaction between opponents' creatures and the imp itself, a mechanism that showcased the innovative ruleset Garfield established for the burgeoning card game genre.
