Mox Sapphire

The Mox Sapphire was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card was conceived as a powerful mana-generating artifact to accelerate gameplay. Its inclusion in the 'Power Nine'—a group of cards considered the most influential and mechanically potent in the game's early history—was solidified by its ability to provide a free blue mana source on the first turn, fundamentally altering the competitive landscape.

The iconic illustration for the Mox Sapphire was created by artist Dan Frazier.
