Neural Network was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a silver-bordered set designed to subvert traditional gameplay mechanics through humor and experimental design. The card was created to function within the set’s focus on the 'Contraptions' mechanic, an artifact-based system that allows players to build and activate a secondary machine-like board state. This mechanical departure reflected Wizards of the Coast's desire to push the boundaries of what a Trading Card Game could achieve outside of tournament-legal play.

The visual identity of the card was rendered by veteran artist Franz Vohwinkel, whose long-standing relationship with the game is characterized by a precise, classic fantasy aesthetic. For this piece, Vohwinkel utilized a clean, functional style intended to evoke the feel of a complex, schematic-heavy blueprint, fitting the lighthearted mad-scientist theme of the Unstable set. Upon release, the card was received primarily as a niche tactical utility, valued more by players who enjoyed the high-variance, chaotic nature of the set’s unique artifact interactions.
