Top-Secret Tunnel

Top-Secret Tunnel was released in 2017 as part of Unstable, the third 'un-set' produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These sets are designed for casual play rather than tournament legality, allowing the developers to experiment with mechanics that break the traditional rules of the game. The card, illustrated by game designer and artist Matt Cavotta, features a whimsical, hand-drawn aesthetic that emphasizes the set's humorous tone and focus on physical play interactions.

The card’s design reflects the experimental nature of the Unstable environment, specifically targeting the set's unique 'Contraptions' mechanic. Cavotta, a long-time contributor to the game’s visual identity, utilized a cartoony, blueprint-style art direction to signal the card's function as a utility piece that alters the landscape of the tabletop battlefield. Upon its release, it was well-received by players who appreciated the lighthearted shift away from the competitive intensity typically found in standard Magic expansions.
