Provenance

Where it came from

The Nightmare token was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were designed to represent the specific creature created by the Nightmare Shepherd or similar mechanics within the game’s mechanics, featuring art that aligns with the fairy-tale gothic aesthetic of the Eldraine plane.

The artwork for this token was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast as part of their recurring effort to provide physical representations for game-state effects. As is common for supplemental tokens in modern sets, the design focuses on evocative, thematic imagery intended to immerse players in the dark, whimsical atmosphere of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion.
