Provenance

Where it came from

Nightmare first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a centerpiece creature for the Black color identity. Its mechanics, which tether the creature's power and toughness to the number of Swamps a player controls, were intended to reward mono-black deck construction. As an iconic representative of early fantasy art, the card has been reprinted across numerous core sets, serving as a staple of the game's classic visual language.

The Seventh Edition version, numbered 150, features the classic illustration originally created by Melissa Benson. Her depiction of the skeletal, flame-maned steed became one of the most recognizable images in the game's early history, capturing the ethereal and ominous tone sought by the development team. While Seventh Edition moved to a modern card frame, the inclusion of Benson's signature artwork was a deliberate choice to maintain the continuity of the creature's legacy for long-time players.
