Provenance

Where it came from

Nightmare was introduced as part of the original Magic: The Gathering Alpha set in 1993, later appearing in the 1993 Unlimited Edition to meet high player demand. Designed by Richard Garfield as a centerpiece of the Black mana color identity, the card features a unique scaling power mechanic that reflects the card's namesake, rewarding players for their commitment to Swamp lands.

The iconic illustration for Nightmare was created by Christopher Rush. His vision emphasized a dramatic, ethereal aesthetic that became synonymous with the early visual language of the game. The card was received as a quintessential 'beater' in early formats, often serving as a primary win condition for players focusing on mono-black control strategies.
