Where it came from
The Nightmare token was released in 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to represent the creature generated by the card Nightmare Shepherd, a powerful black rare that allows players to exile their dying creatures and create 1/1 copies of them. The token serves a functional role in gameplay, providing a physical reminder of these exiled creatures on the battlefield.
The artwork for this token was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who embraced the haunting aesthetic of the Theros underworld. Drawing inspiration from Greek mythology and the concept of returning souls, the design emphasizes a spectral, ethereal quality that aligns with the set's focus on death, rebirth, and the Nyx-infused landscape. The illustration captures a sense of gloom and fluidity, consistent with the set's narrative of heroes trapped in a cycle of eternal haunting.
