Where it came from
Nightmare was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural print run of Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card was intended to establish the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the game's early identity. As a core member of the black mana faction, the creature was conceptualized as a classic manifestation of fear, scaling its power to reflect the player's commitment to swamp lands.
The iconic illustration for the card was provided by Anson Maddocks, who utilized a distinctively visceral, textured style that became synonymous with the game's early visual language. By emphasizing the skeletal, spectral nature of the creature, Maddocks created a visual shorthand for the game's macabre tone. The card was well-received by players at the time, becoming a staple of aggressive black-themed decks due to its straightforward yet potent ability.
