Where it came from
Nightshade Assassin was released in 2019 as part of the Commander 2019 supplemental set for Magic: The Gathering. Originally debuting in the 2007 Planar Chaos expansion, the card was included in this later set to support the 'Merciless Rage' preconstructed deck, which focused on the madness mechanic. This inclusion allowed players to utilize the creature's ability to discard a black card to soften opposing threats while simultaneously triggering other card synergies within the graveyard-focused deck.
The card's illustration is the work of artist Kev Walker, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering art community known for his dark and visceral aesthetic. Walker designed the assassin to embody the shadowy, lethal nature of the card's mechanics, utilizing a muted, atmospheric palette that emphasizes the character's swift and deadly intent. The card has been well-regarded by collectors and players for its functional utility in black-based strategies and its classic, moody visual presentation.
