Where it came from
Nightshade Assassin was originally printed in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering set Planar Chaos. The card was designed as part of the 'timeshifted' concept of that set, which explored alternate realities where familiar color identities and mechanics were shifted. The creature features the madness mechanic, allowing players to cast it for a reduced cost if they discard it, reflecting its opportunistic and agile nature.
The version from Time Spiral Remastered, released in 2021, features the original artwork by Christopher Moeller. Moeller’s illustration depicts the assassin with a dark, atmospheric aesthetic that aligns with the card’s rogue-like flavor. The remastering process sought to curate iconic and mechanically interesting cards from the original Time Spiral block, presenting them with updated frame treatments for modern collectors.
