Provenance

Where it came from

Nim Grotesque was released as part of the Fifth Dawn expansion in June 2004, serving as the final set in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the intersection of the game's mechanics with artifacts, continuing the theme of a metallic world where biological life and machine technology merged. Within the game's lore, the Nim are undead creatures created from the biological scraps of the plane of Mirrodin, reanimated by the toxic influence of the Mephitic pools.

The card's illustration was created by artist Daren Bader, who has been a frequent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Bader utilized a macabre, visceral aesthetic to capture the essence of the Nim, emphasizing the grotesque and stitched-together nature of these beings. While the card is a common-rarity creature known primarily for its utility within the game's Limited format, it remains a notable example of the dark, industrial fantasy imagery that defined the Mirrodin block's visual identity.
