Provenance

Where it came from

The Ninja token was released in 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a return to the plane of Kamigawa, reimagining its traditional, folklore-inspired setting through a futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetic. The token was designed to represent the temporary creatures created by various card abilities, specifically the ninjutsu mechanic that allows players to swap attacking creatures for hidden assassins.

The artwork for this token reflects the set's central tension between ancient spirit magic and high-technology urban sprawl. Created to support the gameplay mechanics of the set, the illustration emphasizes the sleek, masked appearance characteristic of the modern interpretation of ninjas in the Magic multiverse. It was received as a functional and stylistically cohesive component of the wider Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty release, serving its role as a battlefield placeholder for players.
