Where it came from
Nira, Hellkite Duelist was created in 2016 as part of the inaugural 'Heroes of the Realm' set, a series of promotional Magic: The Gathering cards commissioned by Wizards of the Coast. These cards were not sold to the public; instead, they were distributed exclusively to company employees as gifts to commemorate their contributions to the firm and the development of the game. The initiative was designed to foster a sense of pride and exclusivity among staff, serving as a rare artifact of internal company culture rather than a commercial product.
The design of the card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator known for her work on numerous Magic sets. The aesthetic follows the high-fantasy tradition of the game, utilizing a unique gold-bordered frame that distinguishes 'Heroes of the Realm' cards from standard releases. Because these cards are strictly limited to employees and were never part of the tournament-legal pool, they have become highly sought-after collector pieces, prized primarily for their extreme scarcity and the unconventional nature of their distribution.
