What it does

Imprint - Whenever a player cards an instant or sorcery spell, exile it as it resolves.

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may copy an imprinted card and cast the copy without paying its mana cost. It can't cause you to take extra turns. Then, if there are three or more cards imprinted on this artifact, sacrifice it and create a token that's a copy of Niv-Mizzet, Firemind.

Provenance

Where it came from

Niv-Mizzet's Diary (RZ05p) is a promotional card originating from a Wizards of the Coast internal or special event rather than a standard expansion set. It features the Izzet League's iconic dragon parun, Niv-Mizzet, and serves as a narrative artifact that reflects the high-intellect, chaotic aesthetic of Ravnica's blue-red guild. The design prioritizes thematic immersion, often utilized in these rare promotional printings to provide collectors with a deeper look at the lore surrounding the setting's most prominent figures.

The artistic direction for such promotional pieces typically leans into established Magic: The Gathering visual styles, emphasizing the intricate, alchemical, and scholarly nature of the Izzet League. Because these cards occupy a unique space outside of booster pack distribution, they are highly sought after for their scarcity and the specific, niche role they play in the game’s extended card catalog. They are generally well-received within the hobbyist community as prestige items that celebrate specific chapters of the game's long-running story.
