Where it came from
Nomad Outpost was originally printed in the 2014 Khans of Tarkir set, representing the Mardu Horde's harsh, desert-dwelling territory. It serves as a tri-land that taps for red, white, or black mana, designed to support the color identities associated with the Mardu clan. This specific version appeared in the 2024 Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander release, featuring new thematic art that integrates the card into the Western-inspired setting of the Thunder Junction plane.
The art for this iteration was created by illustrator Alayna Danner, who rendered the location with a focus on the rugged, frontier aesthetic of the expansion. By reimagining the Outpost within the context of an interplanar frontier, the design team aimed to maintain mechanical consistency for Commander players while visually updating the location to fit the desert-bandit motif of the Outlaws set. It was received as a functional and flavorful utility land, praised for its accessibility to players building multicolor decks.
