Where it came from
Oblivion Ring was first introduced in the Lorwyn set in 2007, but the Magic 2012 core set version reflects its established role as a quintessential white removal spell in the game. It was designed to provide players with a versatile, albeit temporary, answer to any non-land permanent, effectively balancing power with the risk of the opponent reclaiming their card if the ring is destroyed.
The artwork for the Magic 2012 iteration was created by Kev Walker, a prolific illustrator whose style is central to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. His depiction emphasizes the ring as a literal, ominous construct that traps objects in a swirling, mystical void, successfully conveying both the mechanical effect of exile and the thematic gravity of the spell.
