Where it came from
Obscura Confluence was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around a sprawling, 1920s-inspired metropolis controlled by five distinct crime families. Designed for the multi-player Commander format, the card represents the Obscura, a faction of mystics, spies, and information brokers who manipulate reality through illusion and hidden knowledge. The card was crafted to embody this shadowy, tactical identity, offering players a versatile modal spell that encourages the strategic planning characteristic of the Obscura's criminal organization.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the atmospheric, art deco aesthetic central to the plane of New Capenna. The composition reflects the faction's focus on secrecy and supernatural surveillance, balancing the ornate architectural style of the setting with a sense of underlying tension. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its utility, as its modal nature allows for adaptable gameplay that mirrors the manipulative nature of the faction it serves.
