Where it came from
Obscura Confluence was released as part of the New Capenna Commander set in 2022. It belongs to a cycle of 'Confluence' spells, a mechanic originally introduced in the Commander 2015 set that allows players to choose three modes, with the option to select the same mode multiple times. The card was designed to embody the themes of the Obscura, one of the five crime families in the art deco-inspired metropolis of New Capenna, focusing on information gathering, surveillance, and tactical manipulation.
The artwork for this particular promotional printing was crafted to reflect the distinctive noir-meets-fantasy aesthetic of the plane. Artists contributing to the New Capenna Commander series aimed to capture the intersection of organized crime and arcane power, utilizing high-contrast lighting and urban architectural motifs. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its versatility and its ability to provide flexible utility in a four-player format.
