The Obscura Interceptor was released as part of the Art Series for the Magic: The Gathering set Streets of New Capenna, which debuted in April 2022. This set drew heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and noir crime fiction, centering on the titular city controlled by five distinct demonic-run crime families. The Obscura Interceptor represents the Obscura family, a faction of mages, spies, and occultists who specialize in manipulation and information gathering.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by David Palumbo, who captured the atmospheric, shadowy nature of the faction. Palumbo utilized a muted, elegant color palette and sharp geometric lines consistent with the set's high-society urban theme.
