Where it came from
The Ogre Warrior token was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were designed to represent summoned creatures created by various spells and abilities within the set, which is themed around an art deco-inspired metropolis controlled by five warring crime families. The tokens reflect the grittier, industrial aesthetic of the plane, emphasizing the physical strength associated with the Ogre creature type.
The visual direction for the token was established by the Wizards of the Coast art department to maintain consistency with the noir-fantasy motif of the set. While token cards are typically functional components of gameplay rather than artistic centerpieces, they are celebrated by collectors for their varied illustrations and their role in grounding the narrative experience of the game's setting. The artwork serves as a narrative bridge between the players' cards and the world of New Capenna.
