Where it came from
The Punchcard token was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. Within the game's lore, these tokens represent the mechanical labor and bureaucratic infrastructure of New Capenna, a city defined by its 1920s Art Deco aesthetic and organized crime syndicates. This token was specifically designed to be created by the card 'Rumor Gatherer,' illustrating the city's focus on information control and industrial efficiency.
The visual design draws heavily from the era's transition toward mechanized labor, utilizing the stark geometric patterns and muted color palettes characteristic of the set's noir-inspired art direction. The illustration emphasizes the functional, utilitarian nature of these punchcards, serving as a diegetic prop that reinforces the expansion's themes of corporate corruption and urban stratification within the metropolis of New Capenna.
