Where it came from
Oji, the Exquisite Blade was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. The card was designed to support the set's focus on the Dungeons & Dragons universe, specifically mirroring the tactical, multi-classing nature of characters within the Forgotten Realms setting. As a legendary creature featuring the Azorius color identity, Oji was engineered to provide a synergistic engine for players who enjoy blinking or flickering their permanents to generate repeatable enter-the-battlefield value.
The visual design of Oji was brought to life by artist Wisnu Tan, who aimed to capture the grace and discipline inherent in a blade-master. The aesthetic reflects a blend of high-fantasy elegance and the structured, legalistic sensibilities of the Azorius Senate. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its utility in defensive and value-oriented deck archetypes, quickly becoming a recognized staple for players looking to control the tempo of a board state through rhythmic, cyclic actions.
