Where it came from
Ojutai Exemplars was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the monastic traditions of the Ojutai clan, a faction in the game's lore that emphasizes wisdom, patience, and the mastery of martial arts combined with draconic magic. Within the game's mechanics, it was designed as a rare white creature that rewards players for casting non-creature spells by triggering versatile abilities, reflecting the clan's tactical approach to combat.
The artwork was created by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive portraits and fantasy landscapes. In this piece, Villeneuve focused on depicting the calm, disciplined aesthetic of the Ojutai monks, utilizing a color palette dominated by white and blue to signify their alignment. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid mid-tier entry, appreciated by players for its flexible utility in various constructed formats, though it never reached the level of staple status associated with more powerful rares.
