Where it came from
Omniscience was introduced in the Magic 2013 core set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2012. Designed by the Magic research and development team, the card was intended to capture the quintessential experience of high-mana, game-altering spells that define the 'Timmy' player archetype. Its function, allowing players to cast spells without paying their mana costs, serves as a powerful centerpiece for combo decks, transforming the board state instantaneously.
The evocative artwork was created by Jason Chan, who sought to visualize the concept of absolute knowledge and cosmic awareness. Chan’s illustration features an ethereal figure surrounded by intricate arcane patterns, reflecting the card's ability to transcend traditional gameplay limitations. Upon release, it was received as a quintessential 'mythic rare' that generated significant excitement in the Commander and Legacy formats for its potential to facilitate explosive turns.
