Where it came from
On the Job was released in 2024 as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to function within the top-down design space of the set, which draws heavy inspiration from classic murder mystery tropes, noir aesthetics, and hardboiled detective fiction. Set on the plane of Ravnica, it captures a moment of investigative urgency, illustrating the high-stakes environment where characters must work quickly to resolve crimes before the trail goes cold.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Livia Prima, who rendered the scene with a focus on dramatic tension and professional focus. The visual design reflects the set's central themes of investigation and clandestine activity, emphasizing the grit required to operate in the shadows of Ravnica. Upon release, the card was received as a functional tool for decks focused on creature-based strategies, particularly those that prioritize rapid board development and tactical maneuvers during combat.
