Provenance

Where it came from

Released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Amonkhet, Onward // Victory is a split card designed for the set's unique aesthetic centered on the desert plane of an ancient Egyptian-inspired world. The set was conceived as a top-down design inspired by the tropes of afterlife trials, gods, and pyramids, and the card's mechanics were built around the 'Aftermath' keyword, which allowed players to cast the second half of the card from their graveyard.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his vibrant, emotive style. Voss aimed to capture the thematic duality of the card—where 'Onward' represents the momentum of the trial, and 'Victory' represents the final exertion of power. Upon its release, the card was well-regarded by players for its synergy with aggressive deck archetypes, serving as a distinct piece of utility that rewarded strategic graveyard interaction within the competitive environment of the time.
