Where it came from
Opening Ceremony was released as part of the Unfinity set in 2022, the fourth installment in Wizards of the Coast’s silver-bordered 'Un-' series. These sets are designed to explore the fringes of game mechanics, often introducing humorous or unconventional card types that prioritize interactive fun over traditional competitive play. As an 'Attraction,' this card functions as a distinct permanent that can be triggered through dice rolls, reflecting the carnival-themed aesthetic of the set.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Phil Foglio, a veteran of Magic: The Gathering whose distinct, whimsical style has been a staple of the franchise since its early years. Foglio was specifically chosen for this set to capture the nostalgic, playful energy of the carnival. Upon its release, the card was well-received by fans of casual and commander formats for its ability to introduce unpredictable, high-variance gameplay elements that embody the spirit of the Unfinity expansion.
