Oppression

Oppression was originally printed in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, a set renowned for its high power level and significant impact on the competitive landscape of Magic: The Gathering. Designed during a period of complex mechanical exploration, the card reflects the set's focus on resource management and disruptive playstyles by forcing players to discard a card whenever they cast a spell, effectively punishing those who attempt to play at a high velocity.

The card features artwork by Pete Venters, a prolific illustrator whose distinctive style helped define the visual identity of the game during the late 1990s. Venters sought to capture the oppressive nature of the effect through grim, evocative imagery that aligned with the dark, artifact-heavy atmosphere of the Urza block.
