Where it came from
Oppression was originally introduced in the 1999 Urza's Destiny set as a black enchantment designed to disrupt opponents by forcing them to discard a card whenever they cast a spell. The card reflects the high-power, disruptive design philosophy of the Urza block, which sought to challenge players' resource management and hand advantage.
For the Wilds of Eldraine: Enchanting Tales subset, the card was reimagined with new artwork by Matteo Bassini. His illustration captures the oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere thematic to the card's function, moving away from the original 1999 art to fit the fairytale-gothic aesthetic of the Eldraine plane.
