Provenance

Where it came from

Oraxid was released as part of the Nemesis expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in February 2000. As the final set of the Urza block, Nemesis focused on the conflict between the Phyrexians and the forces of Rath, introducing mechanics like fading and the ability to turn creatures face down. The set was designed to wrap up a complex, multi-year storyline, and its art direction reflected the dark, biomechanical aesthetic of the Phyrexian invasion.

The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, a prolific artist for the game known for his atmospheric and textured approach to fantasy character design. Staples sought to capture the unsettling, insectoid nature of the creature, emphasizing its alien form within the context of the gloomy, post-apocalyptic environment of Rath. Upon release, Oraxid was primarily received as a utilitarian common card intended for limited play environments rather than a centerpiece for competitive tournament decks.
