Provenance

Where it came from

The Rathi Intimidator was released in the year 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Masquerade block, Nemesis focused on the dark, atmospheric plane of Rath, a dimension engineered as a staging ground for the Phyrexians' invasion of Dominaria. The card was designed as a common creature to flesh out the aggressive black-aligned mechanics of the Rathi forces.

The artwork was provided by Mike Ploog, a legendary illustrator and storyboard artist known for his work in both comic books and film. Ploog brought a gritty, visceral sensibility to the depiction of the Intimidator, emphasizing the jagged, nightmarish aesthetic that defined the Rathi environment. While the card is a functional piece of gameplay history rather than a centerpiece, it serves as a distinct example of the transition toward more narrative-driven art direction in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
