Orcish Oriflamme

The Orcish Oriflamme first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the game's early design philosophy where red cards often focused on aggressive, battlefield-wide enhancements. Originally illustrated by Anson Maddocks, the card depicts a banner held aloft by an orcish force, capturing the chaotic, militaristic aesthetic of the game's initial fantasy tropes. Its design—a global enchantment providing a power boost to all attacking creatures—made it a potent, albeit mana-intensive, tool in early deck-building strategies.

The Seventh Edition printing, released in 2001, marked a shift in the game's visual identity as the first base set to feature updated card frames and modernized art direction. This version of the Orcish Oriflamme features art by Pete Venters, who reimagined the card with a tighter focus on the banner itself. While the card's mechanics were considered a relic of older design standards by the time of the Seventh Edition release, the set remains significant to collectors for being the final core set to utilize the classic white-border aesthetic that defined the game's early decade.
