Orim's Prayer

Orim's Prayer was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to shift the game's mechanics toward a more aggressive style, with the card itself representing the character Orim, a healer and ally to the protagonist Gerrard Capashen during the Weatherlight Saga. This period marked a significant expansion in the game's narrative depth, as Wizards of the Coast moved to integrate storyline events directly into the card mechanics.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Quinton Hoover, a foundational artist for the early years of the game. Hoover’s style, characterized by distinct linework and a dreamlike, stained-glass aesthetic, sought to capture the protective and ethereal nature of the spell. While the card is often remembered for its specific mechanics involving life gain and damage prevention, it remains a notable example of Hoover’s contribution to the visual identity of the Tempest set.
