Where it came from
The Oriq Loremage was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It depicts a member of the Oriq, a clandestine group of rogue mages who serve as the primary antagonists within the Strixhaven setting. The card was designed to mechanicalize the group's penchant for forbidden knowledge and blood-magic rituals, reflecting the dark, subversive theme intended to contrast with the academic atmosphere of the university itself.
The artwork was illustrated by Livia Prima, who utilized a high-contrast, dramatic style to emphasize the character's shadowy aesthetic and mystical capabilities. The design focuses on the character's regal yet menacing attire, consistent with the set's broader visual language that draws on prestige fantasy tropes. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for black-mana decks, praised by players for its ability to tutor specific cards at a cost, effectively capturing the high-risk, high-reward flavor of the Oriq lore.
