Where it came from
The Oriq Loremage was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages promotional set, specifically featuring an alternate art treatment. Strixhaven introduced a magical university theme to the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, and the Oriq are depicted as a secret society of antagonists operating within the academy. This specific card represents the clandestine nature of the faction, emphasizing their darker academic pursuits and distinct visual aesthetic compared to the main school colleges.
The illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a high-contrast style to highlight the character's mastery over dark energy and arcane scrolls. The design captures the tension of the set's narrative, focusing on the pursuit of forbidden knowledge. Upon release, the promo was well-received by players for its atmospheric character design and its utility in limited formats, cementing its place as a visually distinct piece of the Strixhaven expansion.
