"Nothing is the same anymore. The forests are not as lush, the waters not as pure, the air not as clear. Without the kami to direct and sustain the forces of nature, it's only a matter of time before we feel their neglect."

Where it came from
The Orochi Sustainer was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavy inspiration from Japanese folklore and mythology, introducing the snake-like Orochi people as a core faction inhabiting the Jukai Forest. This card was designed as a common-rarity green creature, intended to provide early-game mana acceleration and support the expansion's focus on creature-based synergies and forest-dwelling themes.
The illustration was crafted by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the visual identity of the Kamigawa plane. Critchlow depicted the Sustainer as a lithe, shamanistic figure, emphasizing the creature's role as a connection between the Orochi people and the forest spirits. At the time of release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats, where its ability to tap for green mana provided a reliable foundation for decks relying on heavier, more expensive creatures.
