Where it came from
Orvar, the All-Form was released in 2021 as part of the Kaldheim expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing deep inspiration from Norse mythology, the set aimed to capture the harsh, icy aesthetic of the Viking-inspired plane. Orvar, a changeling deity of shapeshifting, was designed to emphasize the set's mechanical themes of copying permanents and manipulating the battlefield through targeted spells.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature style to depict the creature's fluidity and multiple facets. By layering translucent, shifting forms, Voss intended to capture the elusive nature of a shapeshifter who can mimic any shape. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the Commander community as a unique build-around commander, prized for its complex interactions and ability to turn targeted spells into powerful utility engines.
