Orzhov Guildmage

The Orzhov Guildmage was originally released in the 2006 Guildpact expansion, designed to represent the corrupt, ecclesiastical Syndicate of the Ravnica plane. Mechanically, the card was crafted to embody the Orzhov philosophy of life and death through taxation and necromancy, allowing players to drain life or resurrect creatures at a cost. It served as a functional centerpiece for Orzhov-aligned decks during the original Ravnica block, establishing the guild's signature playstyle for years to come.

This version, released in the 2024 Ravnica Remastered set, features updated framing while retaining the core essence of the original design. The artwork captures the gothic, somber aesthetic intrinsic to the Orzhov, utilizing heavy shadows and liturgical motifs to reflect their role as the plane's bankers and debt collectors. The release was intended to provide long-time players with a polished iteration of a classic utility creature, and it was generally well-received for preserving the character of the early Ravnica era within a modern frame.
