Where it came from
Assemble the Legion was first released in the 2013 Magic: The Gathering set Gatecrash, representing the Boros Legion, a militaristic guild defined by justice and order. The card was designed to mechanically embody the guild's signature mechanic, Battalion, by creating an exponentially growing army of soldier tokens. This specific version, collector number 163, is a reprint featured in the 2024 Ravnica Remastered set, which was curated to celebrate the plane of Ravnica by pulling iconic cards from its various iterations throughout the game's history.
The artwork for this card was created by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Voss focused on the scale of the Boros force, illustrating a vast, disciplined formation of soldiers to emphasize the card's function of building an overwhelming military presence over time. The design choice reflects the classic Boros aesthetic of golden armor and red motifs, and the reprint in Ravnica Remastered was well-received by players for its thematic consistency and utility in Commander format decks.
