Where it came from
Overgrowth was originally released as a green enchantment in the Urza's Saga set in 1998, designed to allow players to accelerate their mana production by enchanting a land. The card functions by adding two additional mana of any color whenever the enchanted land is tapped for mana, a powerful effect that has remained a staple in green ramp strategies throughout Magic: The Gathering's history.
The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005, features the artwork of Daren Bader. As part of the Core Set's design philosophy, the card was selected to provide players with a straightforward, effective tool for color fixing and resource generation. The transition of this card into the modern white-bordered frame of Ninth Edition helped maintain its accessibility for newer players while cementing its role as a recurring element of the game's core gameplay experience.
