Where it came from
Overwhelm was originally printed in the Time Spiral expansion of 2006, designed to celebrate Magic: The Gathering's history by revisiting mechanics from earlier sets. The card features the 'suspend' mechanic, which allows players to exile a card from their hand to cast it later at a reduced cost, reflecting the game's fascination with temporal manipulation and strategic foresight during that era of development.
The Modern Masters 2015 edition serves as a curated reprint set, intended to provide players with access to staple cards for the Modern constructed format while simultaneously refreshing the limited drafting environment. The illustration, created by artist Chippy, maintains the surreal, atmospheric aesthetic characteristic of the Time Spiral block, emphasizing a sense of encroaching cosmic scale that aligns with the card's mechanical effect of overwhelming the opponent's board state.
