Where it came from
Pack Guardian was released in April 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the set's focus on the werewolf transformation mechanic and the frantic struggle for survival against encroaching supernatural threats. The design team intended for this creature to embody the aggressive, high-synergy playstyle associated with green-based creature decks of the era.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a moody, atmospheric palette to depict the werewolf emerging from the shadows. Voss aimed to capture the duality and primal ferocity of the character, a thematic staple for the set's dual-faced cards. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency and its ability to provide board presence by creating an additional wolf token, making it a reliable mid-range threat in the competitive environment of the time.
