Where it came from
Pako, Arcane Retriever was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 expansion, specifically within the Timeless Wisdom preconstructed deck. The card was designed to function as a legendary creature capable of partnering with Haldan, Avid Arcanist, a mechanic that highlights the synergistic bond between a retriever and his master. This design space was intentionally crafted to emphasize the 'partner' mechanic, allowing players to utilize two commanders simultaneously to create unique, multi-color strategy combinations.
The artwork was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured Pako as a formidable, gear-clad canine companion. The aesthetic direction leaned into a blend of high-fantasy and utilitarian gear, reflecting the exploratory nature of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths setting. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its aggressive playstyle, which rewards players for attacking by allowing them to exile the top cards of each player's library and cast non-creature spells from among them.
