Provenance

Where it came from

Verge Rangers debuted in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, specifically within the Timeless Wisdom preconstructed deck. This card was designed to support the 'cycling' mechanic, a recurring theme in Magic: The Gathering that allows players to discard cards to draw new ones, thereby smoothing out gameplay. By providing a way to catch up on land drops when facing opponents with more resources, it serves as a functional tool for the social, multiplayer-focused Commander format.

The artwork for Verge Rangers was illustrated by Sidharth Chaturvedi. The design reflects the visual language of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths setting, focusing on the resilient scouts tasked with monitoring the borderlands of a monster-filled plane. The aesthetic emphasizes the rugged, utilitarian nature of these rangers, capturing the tension of explorers navigating a dangerous, untamed environment as they expand their territory.
