Where it came from
Palace Siege was released in 2017 as part of the Commander 2017 card set, which focused on tribal synergies within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. Originally printed in Fate Reforged, this enchantment was selected for the set to provide players with a versatile recursion engine, allowing them to choose between returning creatures from their graveyard to their hand or draining opponents based on creature deaths. It fits within the broader tradition of Orzhov-aligned black-white enchantments that trade life for strategic advantage.
The artwork for this iteration was created by Johannes Voss, whose contributions to the game are noted for their emotive lighting and rich, atmospheric detail. Voss intended to capture the feeling of a fortified hold under pressure, utilizing the dark, gothic aesthetic associated with the game's settings. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its political utility in multiplayer formats, where players often value cards that offer multiple modes of play depending on the state of the board.
