Provenance

Where it came from

Pawn of Ulamog was originally introduced in the Rise of the Eldrazi set in 2010, designed to anchor the Eldrazi theme by creating colorless Spawn tokens that could be sacrificed for mana. The card is mechanically significant for its ability to generate resources whenever other non-token creatures die, rewarding players for aggressive play and sacrifice-based strategies.

The Commander 2017 version, featuring art by Greg Staples, maintains the original visceral aesthetic of the Eldrazi drones. Within the context of the Commander format, the card was reprinted to support the tribal synergies found in the Vampiric Bloodlust preconstructed deck, where it fits naturally into strategies centered on death triggers and battlefield attrition.
